Hyaluronic Acid: An ingredient that actually works

A skincare ingredient with a growing reputation, here’s our lowdown on hyaluronic acid and why it should play a part in your beauty routine.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid, also known as hyaluronan, is capable of holding 1000 times its own weight in water, which makes it a very hydrating ingredient for skincare. The gooey substance retains the moisture and is naturally produced by the body. The component is naturally occurring in the skin, connective tissue and eyes but it depletes over time making.

Why do we need it?

As we age, our skin loses moisture and becomes less firm while losing elasticity. It has been proven that hydrated skin also reduces the appearance of wrinkles over time.

The natural ageing process and exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun, tobacco smoke and pollution can decrease moisture in the skin even more so. Hyaluronic acid provides antioxidants which delivers defence against free radicals whilst delivering the missing hydration.

It is therefore ideal for all skin types and particularly maturing skin.

Does it work?

The ingredient also strengthens the barrier layer, which sits as the outer layers of the skin, leaving it feeling soft and youthful looking.

By giving the skin a boost of Hyaluronic Acid, it becomes smoother, plumper and intensely hydrated.
